Meta ordered to pay $567 Mn to US for 'public nuisance' and 'child harm'

A New Mexico judge has penalised the tech giant for creating a public nuisance and endangering children online. Meta confirmed it plans to appeal, insisting it works hard to protect young users across its platforms.

Meta was previously ordered to pay $375mn in damages to New Mexico in March when a jury found the company liable for making children vulnerable to predators on its platforms

Around three-quarters of the new $567 million fund is set to be used for mental health treatment, with the funds to be paid over five years.

This comes after Meta was ordered to pay $481 million in damages to New Mexico in March.
