A man who was convicted of manslaughter for killing his father in 2010 was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson in connection to the largest of the three fires burning near Spokane, Washington. Firefighters say hundreds of structures have been destroyed so far. Kris Van Cleave has more.

A 37-year-old Spokane, Washington, resident with a previous manslaughter conviction was arrested Monday in connection with largest of the region’s three wildfires, authorities said.

Authorities have arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of arson in connection with the biggest of three fires burning around Spokane, in Washington state. A witness allegedly saw him kneeling near grass where the fire began, the county sheriff said.

The Spokane-area fires have scorched more than 8,000 acres (3,237ha) since erupting on Aug 1.

Wildfires in eastern Washington forced 5,000 home evacuations, destroyed about 600 buildings and continued to strain firefighting resources.
