Mamdani says he opposes RSS, does not support Mohan Bhagwat’s event at Madison Square Garden

The New York City Mayor also clarified that he is unsure if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event in the U.S.

"I don't support the rally, but I don't know if the city has any jurisdiction to cancel a private event," Mamdani, who is the first Muslim and Indian American mayor of New York City, said.

The event's website casts the August 29 gathering as the "Universal Oneness Celebration" bringing together the Hindu American community.

Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, is scheduled to speak at a Manhattan event on Aug 29.
