Lake Mead's water level has hit a record low, underscoring the growing crisis facing the embattled Colorado River system.

Water levels in the reservoir, which sits behind the Hoover Dam, are at record lows. A continued drop would imperil water supplies for millions of people and cut electricity from the dam.

The record follows a winter that produced the worst snowpack on record in the Colorado River Basin.

Lake Mead's water level fell to 1,040.5 feet on Friday. It has continued to fall every day this month, the Bureau of Reclamation reported.
