Karina becomes Category 4 hurricane in Pacific Ocean

Karina strengthened into a major Category 4 hurricane Monday and was moving west into the open waters of the Pacific Ocean, forecasters said.

The storm has intensified quickly since becoming a hurricane Sunday and has been fueled by warm waters far offshore, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Hurricane Karina strengthened Monday into a powerful Category 4 storm in the Pacific Ocean but isn’t threatening land, forecasters said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm intensified Sunday.

Although it's 1,020 miles from land, it may affect Mexico and Southern California with waves, while further strengthening is anticipated.

An Atlantic disturbance could first become a tropical depression then strengthen into Tropical Storm Dolly.

The next Atlantic tropical storm will be named Dolly, a coincidence following the death of country music legend Dolly Parton on Tuesday.

Storm systems are named by procedures set by the World Meteorological Organisation and the lists of names are reused every six years.
