Judge throws out Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's 9/11 confession in already long wait for trial

A judge ruled that portions of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's 2007 confession were involuntary, a decision that could further stall the long-delayed trial.

Schrama rejected the prosecutors' proposal to open the trial in January 2027, saying that would leave too little time for the "resolution of pretrial evidentiary and compliance motions."

His plea deal to avoid a death-penalty trial was rejected by a federal appeals court last summer.

The trial is scheduled to begin June 5, 2028, 18 months later than the January 2027 start that prosecutors had requested.
