John Ternus to lead Apple into the age of AI

Incoming CEO inherits company that leads the smartphone market but trails rivals in AI.

Tim Cook has described John Ternus as a leader with both engineering and organisational strengths.

Apple treated Tim Cook to a farewell tour as he wrapped up his 15-year tenure as CEO on Monday and passed the reins to successor John Ternus – who faces challenges ranging from a troubled AI rollout to a worldwide memory crunch.

The handover ends Tim Cook's 15-year run, replacing the operations specialist who built Apple's supply chain with the engineer who built its hardware.

After 15 years at the helm, today is officially Tim Cook’s last day as Apple CEO. In April, Apple announced that Cook would step down as CEO on September 1, with John Ternus set to take the reins. Cook, of course, isn’t going away completely. Instead, he’s set to become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors.
