Japanese lawmakers travel to Beijing, seeking to mend ties after Takaichi's Taiwan remark fallout

A cross-party group of Japanese lawmakers, including one from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s governing party, headed to Beijing on Monday to meet with Chinese officials for the first time since ties between the two Asian rivals deteriorated after Takaichi’s comment on Taiwan angered China.

A bipartisan delegation of Japanese parliamentarians kicks off a four-day visit to China on Monday, marking a tentative step toward renewed political engagement after ties were strained by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks over Taiwan last year.

The group is expected to meet with senior officials of the Chinese Communist Party in the first such exchange since Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made remarks that angered Beijing.
