A massive explosion ripped through Aeon Mall in Kumamoto just weeks after its grand reopening, leaving up to 30 employees unaccounted for.

The Aeon mall had reopened just last month after being rebuilt following the deadly 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, but was destroyed again in Tuesday's earthquake in Japan.

The strongest impact was felt in the Kumamoto region on Kyushu island, where the 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Emergency workers were racing to find people and extinguish fires after the 6.8 magnitude quake struck the southwestern prefecture of Kumamoto.
