The Spanish government has given Rome until Sunday to restore passport-free travel and put an end to the crackdown instituted amid the Ceuta crisis.

The government believes Italy's checks on travellers from Spain breach the spirit of Schengen and has given Rome until Sunday to lift them before taking "proportionate measures."
