Is China seeking to copy Iran’s Strait of Hormuz blockade around Taiwan?

Taiwan has long prepared for a Chinese military invasion but wars in Iran and Ukraine expose new potential threats.

Iran maintains it effectively controls much of the waterway and intends to impose a toll system in response to the US war launched by Trump on 28 February.

Even if a cease-fire materializes, Gulf exporters recognize that relying strictly on the Strait of Hormuz is a risk they can no longer take.

Trump claimed the US has "total control" of the Strait of Hormuz, touting a Navy "Wall of Steel" blockade as oil flows top 15 million barrels a day.

Saudi Arabia has redirected oil exports away from the Strait of Hormuz, but most Gulf producers still lack a reliable backup option to the world's most important energy choke point.
