IRGC says ship struck 2 sea mines after U.S. declared Hormuz cleared

A supertanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz struck two sea mines, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Monday.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the tanker had been attempting to pass through the waterway illegally when it was struck by two mines and caught fire.

U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers Sunday after the military observed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Tehran to vow retaliation in the first known American strike inside Iran since late July.

"We will take retribution" against the US for striking Larak Island, a spokesperson for the IRGC told state broadcaster IRIB on Sunday evening, adding that Iran "will punish those responsible."

The naval force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared on Saturday that it retains “complete control” over the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that the waterway will remain closed to vessels attempting to cross without coordination with Tehran as the US military continues to enforce a naval blockade.
