The president's latest statement came one day after he threatened the nation of Oman if its rulers aided Tehran in its effort to control the critical waterway.

More than five months into the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's parliament speaker says the waterway will remain closed until the US meets Tehran's demands. The announcement comes as a ship transiting the Strait was hit and damaged by an "unknown projectile," resulting in a crew casualty.

Iran and Oman, both coastal states on Hormuz, have for weeks been discussing the future of navigation through the strait, with Tehran saying the geographical coordinates of the route envisaged by both countries "have been agreed upon".

War between Iran and the United States broke out on February 28 after US-Israeli attacks on the Islamic republic, triggering a conflict across the region.
