Iceland votes on whether to start EU membership talks

REYKJAVIK, Aug 29 - Icelanders vote on Saturday on whether to reopen membership talks with the European Union, with islanders split down the middle after months of debate focused on the cost of living, security and control over fishing waters.

Turbulent international affairs have brought the vote forward, but the campaign has focused more on Iceland's vital fishing industry.

The usually genial country has been bitterly divided over a vote this weekend on whether to enter membership talks with the European Union.

Icelanders are to vote Saturday on whether to resume entry talks with the European Union amid growing global insecurity, in a referendum seen as going down to the wire.
