Hungary parliament elects former supreme court head Andras Baka as president

BUDAPEST, Aug 11 - Hungary's parliament elected Andras Baka, a former head of the Supreme Court, as the country's next president on Tuesday, a symbolic step in Prime Minister Peter Magyar's effort to dismantle former premier Viktor Orban's bastions of power.

Hungary's parliament has overwhelmingly confirmed Andras Baka, formerly the head of the Supreme Court, to the largely ceremonial role of president. New Prime Minister Peter Magyar controversially removed his predecessor.

Baka replaces Orban appointee Tamas Sulyok, ousted weeks ago during Tisza’s campaign against Orban-era power structures.

Besides a brief stint as a lawmaker, elected from the conservative Hungarian Democratic Forum's party list in 1990, after the democratic transition, Baka did not hold any political positions.
