A state of emergency is declared in the US state of Nevada as rampant wildfire spurs evacuations.

The fast-growing Hawk Fire was spreading toward neighborhoods in northwest Reno early Sunday, growing to more than 10,500 acres (42 sq. km.) Nearly 14,000 homes were ordered evacuated, and the “GO NOW” zone reached the edge of the University of Nevada campus.

The Hawk fire has burned more than 10,000 acres and is encroaching on the northern part of the city, causing the governor to issue a state of emergency.

Firefighters in Nevada are struggling to contain a fast-growing wildfire which has already forced the evacuation of nearly 14,000 people.
