A homemade bomb carried by a woman killed three people and injured at least 21 in an explosion near an upscale restaurant in central Moscow, authorities said.

The explosion occurred close to a restaurant terrace on Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow on Saturday evening at approximately 8:10pm (6:10pm BST), killing three and injuring 21, the Interior Ministry confirmed

The explosion occurred just before 8:00 p.m. local time close to an Italian restaurant located in one of Moscow's seven Stalin-era skyscrapers at Kudrinkskaya Square, the police said.

Russian authorities said the blast occurred outside a restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square when a woman allegedly carrying explosives was stopped by a security guard.

Among the victims of the explosion, which also injured 21 people, were a security guard and a woman who the authorities say had arrived with the suspicious package.

The woman attempted to bring the device into the restaurant but was refused entry before it exploded, state media reported.
