House censures GOP Rep. Chuck Edwards over ‘inappropriate conduct’ with female staffers

A bipartisan ethics probe found Edwards, R-N.C., showered the aides with lavish gifts, invited them to intimate dinners and trips and wrote them poetry. He denied any wrongdoing.

The 413-2 vote to censure the two-term congressman comes after the House Ethics Committee recommended he be reprimanded for “unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” toward the female staffers, including commenting on their physical appearance, lavishing them with gifts and inviting them to vacation with him.

The censure vote drew bipartisan support, and followed an investigation by the House Ethics Committee into allegations of sexual harassment against two young female staff members.

Democrats and Republicans both voted to formally rebuke Edwards, after the House Ethics Committee found there was "substantial reason" to believe he had "engaged in persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers."
