A major search was launched after an avalanche struck the expedition high on Pakistan's Broad Peak. The confirmation ended hopes of a rescue and marked the loss of one of the world's best-known high-altitude climbers.

The 43-year-old prodigy was killed in an avalanche that hit Broad Peak, located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir at an altitude of around 7,000 metres, on Thursday.
