Hurricane Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane near Hawaii’s Big Island Saturday, bringing dangerous winds, heavy rain, flooding and mudslide threats.

Lala, formerly a tropical storm, strengthened into a hurricane on Saturday morning as it approached the Big Island of Hawaii, U.S. weather officials said. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Lala's maximum sustained winds reached 75 mph (120 km/h), making it a Category 1 hurricane.

Hurricane Lala is forecast to bring heavy rain and life-threatening flooding to Hawaii this weekend.

Lala has strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane as it continues to track through the central Pacific Ocean, approaching the Big Island of Hawaii on Saturday.
