Hawaii County mayor braces for Lala's potential hurricane fury

Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda joined CBS News with more emergency preparedness details as Tropical Storm Lala approaches and could soon become a hurricane.

Tropical Storm Lala formed Thursday in the Pacific Ocean and is expected to become a hurricane while approaching the Big Island of Hawaii, where it could bring heavy rain and flooding this weekend, forecasters said.

Forecasters have warned the system is expected to reach hurricane strength as it approaches Hawaii's Big Island.

This storm, a rarity for this part of the Pacific, is expected to bring heavy rains, strong wind and possibly “life-threatening flooding” to Hawaii this weekend

The storm is forecast to bring rain to the Hawaiian Islands starting late Friday as well as high winds and dangerous surf, the National Hurricane Center said.
