Grand designs: Tashkent’s modernist architecture joins UNESCO World Heritage List

The listing covers ten buildings and complexes from the 1960s to the early 1990s, recognising how modernist design was adapted to Central Asian traditions, climate and urban life.

India now has 45 World Heritage Sites according to the UNESCO website. The last addition or ‘inscription’ was in 2024, with the Maratha Military Landscapes located Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

The List of World Heritage Sites includes sites in three categories: cultural sites, natural sites, and mixed sites which combine the two.
