Governor of Mexico's Sinaloa state, indicted by U.S., steps down from office — again

Gov. Rubén Rocha Moya of Mexico's Sinaloa state announced Saturday he is once again taking leave — a day after returning to office following a months-long absence after being indicted in the United States on drug-trafficking and other charges.

Embroiled in drug trafficking charges, Ruben Rocha Moya has asked for another leave of absence just days after returning to his position as Sinaloa state governor.

Rocha's return was not well received by either the Mexican government or the ruling Morena party, which accused him of prioritizing his personal interests over those of the public.

After U.S. prosecutors accused Gov. Rubén Rocha Moya of protecting the Sinaloa cartel, he said he would step down to focus on his defense. On Friday, he declared he was back.

The governor, who leads the state of Sinaloa, has been accused by the Trump administration of partnering with a cartel.
