Gideon Boako labels cross-border VAT a ‘social media tax’, warns of double taxation on online purchases

Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr Gideon Boako, has criticised the government’s decision to introduce a Cross-Border E-Commerce Value Added Tax (VAT) system, describing it as a “social media tax” that will increase the cost of digital services and online shopping for Ghanaians.

The proposed rules would would bar minors from posting, sharing, or commenting on social media platforms.

Children under 16 would be required to have their social media accounts registered by a parent or legal guardian responsible for monitoring the content.

Gideon revealed that former cabinet minister and UN ambassador Gilad Erdan approached her about a possible move into politics ahead of Israel’s 2026 national election.
