Yemen's coastguard on Tuesday said alleged strikes by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels on a cargo vessel killed at least six people near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait off the country's southern coast.

Six people were killed after Iran-backed Houthis attacked a commercial vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, according to Yemeni officials.

The attack was reportedly carried out by Iranian proxy on a small cargo ship, as tensions in region over the US-Iran conflict remain high.

The Yemeni government said the ship was carrying food supplies to a port on the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The Iran-backed Houthis have not commented on the attack.
