A tsunami warning was later lifted but people were warned not to return to damaged buildings for fear that aftershocks may bring them down. Dozens of aftershocks have already been felt, the strongest measured at a magnitude of 6.1.

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia early Saturday, killing at least five people.

The quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of just 10 kilometres.

An additional earthquake was detected in the same region soon after, with BMKG noting its classification as magnitude 5.5 following an earlier classification of 6.3.
