The Justice Department alleges the defendants conspired in a multimillion-dollar, decade-long scheme that involved more than 1,000 sham marriages to obtain legal immigration status in the U.S.

The U.S. Justice Department announced Wednesday that 11 people have been charged with in connection in an alleged marriage fraud scheme.

Federal charges target 11 defendants in a marriage fraud network that arranged over 1,000 sham unions for Chinese nationals seeking green cards.

Some immigrants paid thousands of dollars to take part in the scheme, which led to permanent legal status, the DOJ said.
