FDA Classifies Egg Recall as Class I for Highest Health Risk

Nearly 20 million eggs were recalled in July over salmonella concerns. The new classification signals a “reasonable probability” of “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

U.S. food regulators say 1.6 million cartons of recalled eggs can "cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

Class 1 indicates “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The FDA classified a recall of 1.5 million eggs as Class I due to Salmonella risks. Midwest Poultry Services initiated the recall.

A Class I recall indicates “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," according to the FDA.

The recall was reclassified as Class I this week, the FDA's highest severity level, after the agency tied the eggs to 98 illnesses across 17 states

The FDA warns that consuming potentially contaminated eggs could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Midwest Poultry Services first issued the recall of 1.6 million brown and white eggs in late July.
