FBI agent charged with stealing nearly $1M in crypto from investigation target

An FBI counterintelligence supervisor took about US$925,000 worth of cryptocurrency from a foreign intelligence target he was investigating and moved it to his own wallet, according to a criminal complaint filed in Virginia last week.

Patrick Yaroch allegedly memorized crypto seed phrases found in FBI files, moved the funds into personal accounts, then confessed after saying the shame was “eating him up inside.”

An FBI supervisor detailed to the U.S. intelligence community is facing two federal charges, accused of transferring nearly a million dollars from cryptocurrency accounts tied to an adversarial nation into his personal cryptocurrency wallet.

An FBI agent stole more than US$900,000 in cryptocurrency from accounts the agency was monitoring after he said he became frustrated by what he saw as government inaction over the misuse of crypto accounts, according to court records made public on Monday.
