In an unprecedented step, European nations said they would boycott the World Cup unless FIFA reverses a controversial deal to sell minority stakes to the marquee soccer tournament.

UEFA members unanimously voted to boycott ‌the ⁠World ⁠Cup and other FIFA competitions. The protest follows FIFA's plan to ‌sell stakes to investors ‌in a subsidiary ‌that will run the governing body's tournaments.

On Tuesday, FIFA confirmed its plans to sell a significant minority stake in a new entity that it is setting up to run its main events.
