Europe's summer heatwaves were responsible for over 30,000 deaths, study predicts

According to the analysis, which is based on data provided by EuroMomo, a total of 33,000 heat-related deaths were recorded across just eight countries.

Experts say Europe's heatwaves this summer have been "exceptional", causing riverbeds across the continent to dry up. Now the flow-on effects are being felt economically.

Europe saw at least 30,000 excess deaths across a blistering summer of back-to-back heatwaves and drought which scientists have blamed on man-made climate change, according to provisional figures.

Between mid-July and mid-August, the continent's EuroMomo monitoring platform estimates that Europe saw more than 32,000 excess deaths — with summer yet to come to an end.

Germany's public health authority said around 9,600 of its 14,000 heat-related deaths occurred in one late June week. Spain's public health institute reported 4,458 such deaths from June 1 to August 19, the most for the period since 2022.
