The whole planet is warming, but changes in weather patterns could help explain why the continent is suffering so many bouts of severe heat.

A large part of Europe is in the grip of its fifth heatwave of the summer, with temperatures in parts of France soaring to 40 degrees Celsius. The U.K. recorded its hottest day of the year Thursday, with the temperature reaching 38.1 C in west London. Britain, like France, is experiencing its fifth heat wave of the year.
