At least 47 people have been killed after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia, triggering hundreds of aftershocks, widespread destruction and landslides. Rescue operations are underway as remote villages remain difficult to reach and the death toll is expected to rise.

Thousands of evacuees waited for help on Indonesia's island of Flores after a powerful earthquake killed 48 people, injured dozens and damaged hundreds of houses and buildings.

Mapping efforts and building assessments have begun in order to establish plans and priorities for the ongoing response efforts.
