Dutch court hands life sentence to Rwandan man for genocide role

A Dutch court has sentenced a Rwandan man to life in prison for his role in the murder of thousands during the 1994 genocide in the Central African country.

The District Court in The Hague has sentenced 66-year-old Eugene N. to life in prison for his involvement in the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

The defendant, identified only as Eugene N., had fled to the Netherlands in 1998 and later obtained Dutch nationality. Dutch prosecutors opened an investigation into him in 2020.

The Rwandan-born Dutch national was found guilty of involvement in the massacre of around 3,000 Tutsis, including throwing a grenade into a crowd of people sheltering in a football stadium.

A Dutch court convicted a Rwandan man of participation in his home country's 1994 genocide and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Eugene N. was convicted for his part in a massacre at a stadium in which 3,000 Tutsis were slaughtered.

The court in The Hague convicted the 66-year-old of war crimes and the crime of genocide.
