DRC: Schools reopen in ebola epicentre despite concerns

As students around the world prepare to go back to school, the beginning of the academic year in the Democratic Republic of Congo is far from straightforward, as the country remains in the grips of an ebola outbreak.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 deaths. As the virus spreads, authorities are racing to contain one of the deadliest outbreaks in history.

The union representing teachers in Ituri province, the epicentre of the outbreak, had called for a delay in restarting classes, but the government pressed ahead.
