The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is now the worst the country has ever experienced.

The Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has intensified, becoming the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.

The current strain has so far killed 1,587 people, and there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment.

The virus has now spread across five provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo, affecting 49 health zones.

As at July 30, 3,605 confirmed cases, including 1,587 deaths, had been reported in the DR Congo.

The long-running conflict in eastern Congo has driven nearly 10 million people into crisis or emergency levels of hunger, with Ituri — the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak — among the most affected with 1.9 million in need of food, according to the World Food Program.

The disease has killed more than 1,500 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo in just over two months, causing deaths faster than officials have ever recorded.
