The Department of Justice announced on Monday that it was opening an investigation into the College of William and Mary over whether the college violated the Civil Rights Act. The concerns stem from the school allegedly using race-based criteria to determine the distribution of scholarships and other student benefits.

The Department of Justice is probing whether the College of William & Mary's scholarships and programs favor racial minorities in violation of Title VI.

The university has until Sept 8 to supply requested materials and comply with agency investigators.
