The death toll in Spain's Ceuta border crisis with Morocco has climbed to 67. They included some who drowned and some who were killed in a stampede to cross a breakwater barrier.

Spurred by messages on social media, around 50,000 people illegally crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta since Thursday, July 30, in an unprecedented influx. But most have already been forced to make the journey back.

Spain is rushing troops and resources to one of its territories in North Africa, after tens of thousands of migrants crossed the border from Morocco into the small city of Ceuta. Geoff Bennett reports.

About 48,000 of the up to 60,000 people who came into Ceuta from Morocco returned within a day. Still, the sudden influx created a crisis for Spain’s pro-immigration government. Nearly three dozen died.

The official death toll in Spain's tiny North African territory of Ceuta has risen to 57, after tens of thousands of migrants overran border controls and swam and climbed in from neighbouring Morocco.

The Spanish Interior Ministry said 37,500 had already returned to Morocco, with hundreds more going back by the hour.

Officials estimate that more than 49,000 people crossed between Morocco and Ceuta in a 24-hour period.
