Danube River’s shrinking water levels expose dozens of World War II ships

Amidst record-low water levels that have caused governments across Europe to plan for electricity shortages, German ships sunk in the war are resurfacing.

Historians say the retreating Nazis scuttled as many as 200 ships in the Danube gorge as they retreated in 1944.

All basins in mainland Portugal, with the exception of the Lima and Mondego basins in the north, had above-normal water levels at the end of July, reveals the National Water Resources Information System (SNIRH).
