Danube dries in heat: skeleton of giant mammoth uncovered in Bulgaria

Record-low water levels have exposed the bones of a large mammoth in the riverbed near the village of Ryahovo in Bulgaria. Experts believe it is a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius).

The bone fragments found near the city of Ruse “very likely” belonged to a woolly mammoth that lived during the Ice Age.

Record-low water levels in the river – blamed on climate change and historic mismanagement – are affecting agriculture, shipping and energy production.

The remains of what is believed to be an ancient mammoth have been revealed in northern Bulgaria, after Danube River water levels receded to a record low level, the BTA news agency reported on Wednesday, citing historians.
