Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm Sunday after skirting Hawaii without making landfall, but it still punished the Big Island with heavy rain and strong wind gusts. More than three feet of rain fell in some places, and all that water turned rivers into raging torrents. NBC News’ Morgan Chesky reports.

The poweroutage.com website reported 42,889 customers without power as of 2:14 p.m. HST in Hawaii, including 31,792 on the Big Island and 7,203 in Maui County.

Hawaiian Electric warned customers to expect “possible extended outages, potentially overnight,” as the storm system made its way westward across Hawaii.
