The World Health Organization says the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak started in February, months before it was officially declared in May.

The WHO regional director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, said sequencing indicated the outbreak’s start, with some cases early wrongly attributing to malaria and typhoid.

Confirmed cases of Ebola in this outbreak have reached 4,200, including more than 1,900 deaths, according to the latest government figures.

The shift comes as confirmed cases climbed to 4,209 and deaths totaled 1,916, pushing the outbreak's crude case-fatality ratio to 45.5%.

More than 300 children have died from Ebola since the outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to figures cited Friday by United Nations deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq.
