Police in Spain have arrested five people accused of charging migrants thousands of dollars to take them to mainland Europe from Ceuta, the Spanish territory in northern Africa that has seen a deadly migrant rush.

Hundreds of migrants are being removed from their makeshift camps on a beach in Ceuta, Spain.

On Thursday morning, it began relocating over 1,000 people from the beach to reception centres set up in army tents.

Many people remain in makeshift camps, including vulnerable groups such as unaccompanied children, women and girls.

An estimated 5,000 people are living in open-air, makeshift camps that have popped up across the exclave of Ceuta.

The latest attempt comes two weeks after tens of thousands of would-be migrants, driven by poverty and misinformation, rushed toward Ceuta in one of the deadliest migration crises to hit the region.

Grassroots calls for a second incursion into Ceuta from Morocco fell flat over the weekend, with security tight and authorities turning back the relative handful who tried to make the move.
