Summer McIntosh earned a gold medal Thursday night, defeating Jenna Forrester of Australia in championship record time in the women's 400-metre individual medley at the Pac Pacific swimming competition in Irvine, Calif.

As the year's biggest event begins, McIntosh is already firmly at the top of the sport. The question now is how much better can she get.
