Bodies of climbers killed in avalanche retrieved from Broad Peak

A search team has retrieved the remains of renowned climber Nirmal Purja and several members of his team.

Pakistani military helicopters on Thursday airlifted the bodies of five climbers from the snow-covered slopes of Broad Peak nearly a week after an avalanche swept away a 10-member international expedition, officials said.

The airlift by Pakistani military helicopters raised the number of recovered bodies to eight, including renowned British-Nepali climber Nirmal Purja.

Legendary mountaineer Nirmal Purja, known worldwide as 'Nimsdai', is finally set to return home after his body was recovered from Broad Peak and brought down to Base Camp in a challenging rescue operation led by his friend.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan said the operation was one of the most technically demanding recovery missions ever carried out on the mountain.
