American climber’s remains found after avalanche in Pakistan, other mountaineers still missing

The remains of an American mountain climber who got caught in an avalanche in Pakistan were found on Friday, according to Pakistani officials.

Pakistan rescue teams have resumed a high-altitude search for seven climbers missing after a powerful avalanche on one of the world's highest peaks, with the remains of three mountaineers recovered.

Four bodies, including that of an American climber, have been recovered since the avalanche struck on Thursday. The fate of renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja was still unclear.

Widely known as Nims Dai, Nirmal Purja, 43, is a former soldier in the British army and has climbed the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record 189 days in 2019.

Ten climbers, including the legendary Nepalese mountaineer, Nirmal Purja, were reported missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in PoK on Thursday.

American climber Sarah Mallory Geis was among at least 10 mountaineers caught in a Broad Peak avalanche as rescue teams search for others.

Three bodies have been recovered so far, with the search continuing for the remaining seven.
