Algeria president seeks death penalty for arsonists after deadly forest fires

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has said he wants to reinstate the death penalty for arsonists, following a wave of deadly forest fires.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune's call comes after wildfires killed at least 12 people and injured 54 in northeastern Algeria.

Algeria declared three days of mourning after wildfires killed 12 people and injured dozens. Authorities said 46 fires remained active, with 54 people hospitalised for burns, including six in critical condition.
