China said it continues to support a diplomatic end to the US-Iran war, in a delayed statement released shortly before Washington is set to unveil measures to punish Tehran’s economic partners.

Ajit Doval and Wang Yi carry the title "Special Representatives" under a mechanism that goes back to 2003, built to chip away at the 3,488 km border dispute between the two countries.

The talks come ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s anticipated visit to India for the BRICS Summit in September.
