An earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.1 shook Kumamoto on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu late Tuesday afternoon, causing damage and injuries, officials said.

Power is out in around 50,000 homes and 50 people are in hospital but authorities say no large waves are expected off Kyushu.

Japan’s prime minister Sanae Takaichi, in a message posted on X, urged residents to avoid the coastline.
