Residents in Cairo were woken by the tremor, which was also felt near Egypt's border with Gaza, though no injuries have been reported so far.

The quake occurred at 3 a.m. local time about 22 miles north ⁠of the Egyptian city of Suez, the US Geological Survey said.

An earthquake measuring 5.6 ‌in magnitude struck 38 km (24 miles) north of the Egyptian city of Suez ​just after 3:00 a.m. (0000 ​GMT) on Monday, Egypt's National Research ⁠Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics ​said.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4 and hit at a depth of 6 miles, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences.
